FEBRUARY 2012 MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
It’s easy to tell when February arrives for our student athletes are often seen running indoors and practicing hurdles, evidence that spring sports are just around the corner. Spring also brings NJASK assessments in math and language arts for students in grades three through eight. While these benchmark tests are only one variable used in determining student achievement, your child may not realize this fact about such high-profile tests. Parents can help this process by discussing fears and concerns about testing with their children and encouraging them to simply do their best at all times. It is important to insure your child gets enough sleep during NJASK testing timeframes and has a nutritious breakfast before coming to school.
As you may know, on January 27th, the Council on Local Mandates (CLM) heard a complaint filed by the Allamuchy Township Board of Education that the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (ABR) imposes an unfunded mandate on boards of education, and the CLM found in favor of the Allamuchy Board. A written opinion on this issue will be filed within 60 days and the ABR mandates will remain in effect until additional direction is received.
The Midland Park Boosters held a great Beefsteak Fundraiser to close January in fine style and the MPPEF is planning for its Blue Jean Ball in early March. Plans to acknowledge Read Across America Week at the elementary level are underway and MPHS is planning for several orientations welcoming new student populations. Of course, everyone is looking forward to the upcoming MPHS production of The Drowsy Chaperone as it’s truly wonderful to watch our amazing students showcase their many talents. We’re enjoying busy and exciting days in Midland Park schools and remain grateful for the mild winter weather experienced thus far.
Best regards,
