ABOUT BOATING SAFETY           FEE: $90

This beginner boating course will give you the knowledge needed to obtain the required NJ Boating Safety Certificate. The course will cover federal, state and local boating laws and regulations, required safety equipment, safe boating practices, PWC and small boat handling, trailering and protecting your boat, navigation and emergency procedures. The state test will be administered at the last session. Upon passing the test, the Boating Certificate will be issued on the same night of the test. Students must be at least 13 years old and must attend all 4 classes in order to receive a certificate.  Instructor: U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY FLOTILLA 10-13

 

A PADDLER’S GUIDE TO SAFETY          FEE: $39
Monday – 6:30-9:30 p.m. (1 sess. Apr. 16)    Midland Park H.S.
The objective of this course is for novice paddlers to be aware of the basic issues and needs for paddling safety, the basic equipment they should have, and to provide some info about paddling that will help them be a more knowledgeable and safer paddler.  Emphasis will be placed on the need to have and wear a proper life jacket, to be prepared and have proper safety equipment and the need for general awareness about all aspects of paddling safety including situational awareness and the need to practice skills.  This course covers safety for kayaks, kayak fishermen and Stand Up paddleboards.

BASKETBALL—MEN’s AND WOMEN’s         FEE: $105

Full or half court basketball for persons (age 18 plus) who like a competitive means to stay in good physical condition. Games will be co-ed on separate half courts.  Instructor: BART MEROLA

FOIL FENCING-BEGINNER/SECOND STAGE (CO-ED)                           FEE: $135
Thursday – 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

This program is designed to develop coordination, stamina, mental awareness and total physical fitness for students of all ages.  Footwork, parries, offensive and defensive moves will be taught along with rules and safety regulations.   This basic course also provides foils, masks and all protective gear.  Students should wear sneakers and comfortable clothing.  Register yourself and a friend and receive a free fencing glove or equivalent.  For further information, call Mr. Carnevale at 201-385-7619. 

 

ELECTRIC FOIL & EPEE FENCING –

These programs are designed for those adults who are experienced in electric foil fencing. Students should have their own equipment.

 

HIKING IN LOCAL MOUNTAINS FEE: $69
Saturday, 9:30 a.m. start (4 hikes Apr. 14. 21, 28, May 5)
Offered in cooperation with Glen Rock Community School. Register through M.P.C.E.
Hikes are designed for beginner and moderate hikers. During our trips, you learn the history of the Ramapo Mountains while visiting historic iron mines, cave shelters, century old buildings, a Revolutionary War entrenchment. The scenery affords some of the best mountain top views and waterfalls found in the local forests. More than just a walk down the path, our hikes will take us over mountains, through valleys, and across streams. Hikers should be in reasonable condition for a moderate and steady pace of 3 to 5 hours. In order to receive pertinent orientation materials, all registrations must include a current email address. Consult your physician before attempting a physically challenging activity like hiking. Hikes are led by experienced hiker in the Adirondack and Ramapo Mountains, ROBERT PURCELL, who climbed Machu Pichu in Peru. He is a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and a history buff.

 

GOLF “FORE” BEGINNERS           FEE: $95
Thursday— 8:00-9:30 p.m. (4 sess. Mar. 8, 15, 22, 29)         Highland School Gym
“Well worth the investment,” a comment from past classes. Join this fun and exciting class where you will learn to develop proper habits or overcome bad ones. Coach Bennett is an avid golfer who will instill the fundamentals such as: grip, swing, stance, etc. Mats and whiffle balls provided. Please bring wedge or nine iron to class.
