The week of May 7-11th is designated Teacher Appreciation Week, a special time set aside each year when we pause to thank teachers for their professional dedication and service to children.Midland Park’s teachers work daily with our students to guide and inspire them on their journey toward attaining the goal of lifelong learning. There is an oft-repeated Russian proverb which speaks to the role of education in one’s life, “Education is light; lack of it is darkness.”For all that our teachers do to light the way for students along their academic journeys, we extend sincere thanks and wish one and all a happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
On April 30th, the New JerseyDepartment of Education (NJDOE) released the final report of its College and Career Readiness Task Force.Findings included recommendations to replace the current high school assessments, High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) and the Alternative High School Assessment(AHSA), with end-of-course assessments that measure students at each gradel evel.New Jersey is one of twenty-four states in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and PARCC assessments are scheduled to be administered in language arts literacy and math in 2014-15.Science and social studies assessments are expected to be developed at the state or local level. In addition, the NJDOE has recalculated the graduation rate using a new federally-mandated methodology. The prior method was considered flawed and Commissioner of Education Cerf maintains the new calculation rate represent a more accurate picture of the true level of high school graduation statewide.Under the prior calculation, New Jersey’s graduation rate was 94.7%; under the new calculation, the state’s graduation rate for 2011 is 83%.It is clear that New Jersey’s public education system is in a period of rapid change—please know we will do our best to keep you updated in days to come.
